Types of Dark Circles: Causes and What Skincare Can Help

Types of Dark Circles: Causes and What Skincare Can Help

Dark circles can involve pigment, visible blood vessels, shadows from the shape of the eye area, or a mixture of these. The cause matters: a hydrating eye product can improve the feel and appearance of dry skin, but it cannot correct every source of darkness.

1. Pigment-related dark circles

Brown-looking darkness may involve melanin. Genetics, sun exposure and irritation can contribute. Rubbing and an irritated eye area can make pigmentation more difficult to manage. Colour alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.

2. Visible vessels and thin skin

Thin, translucent skin can make the vessels beneath it more visible, sometimes giving a blue or purple appearance. This is different from excess pigment. Because this differs from pigment-related darkness, the same skincare approach may not suit both.

3. Structural shadows

Hollows, tear troughs and the contours around the eyes can cast shadows that change with the light. An oil or moisturiser does not replace lost tissue or correct the structure of a tear trough.

4. Mixed causes

Several factors can occur together. Puffiness, allergies and rubbing may also affect how dark the area looks. A persistent concern is easier to assess with professional advice than by repeatedly adding stronger skincare.

Where FWBEAUTY eye care fits

Saffron Under Eye Night Repair is a creamy evening serum for nourishment, hydration and softer-looking dryness lines. Saffron Gold Brightening Serum is an oil-based radiance and nourishment step; use around the under-eye area only as directed and keep clear of the eyes.

Choose the texture and routine that suit your skin rather than assuming you need both. Explore our under-eye skincare collection for the available options. Cosmetic care is not a treatment for an underlying eye condition.

A comfortable under-eye routine

  • Remove makeup gently and avoid rubbing.
  • Use a small amount of product as directed; keep away from the eyes and lash line.
  • Introduce one new product at a time and stop if it causes irritation.
  • Use appropriate sun protection and sunglasses during the day.

When to seek advice

Ask a healthcare professional about persistent or worsening darkness, especially new changes under just one eye or swelling. Do not apply strong facial brightening treatments to eyelids unless advised.
