Natural -V- Synthetic which is better?

Naturally derived products can be highly effective when formulated properly. However natural does not necessarily mean better, after all poison ivy is natural too. Synthetic products are not inherently dangerous because they are created in a laboratory, and many may actually be bioavailable.

So what are natural products?

Natural materials are those that are found in nature and have not been made by humans. It can be metabolised more easily by the skin. Natural skincare products do not contain harmful and toxic chemicals. They do not contain harsh preservatives or synthetics ingredients that may irritate the skin. Natural skincare works with skin and therefore reduces depleting or blocking the skin spores. They are earth-friendly: Organic products are not only good for the skin, they are good for the environment.

Natural products have well stood the test of time. What do you think people were using before all these supposed ‘skin enhancing’ chemicals were discovered?Natural ingredients of course! Many ingredients that are included in modern organic skincare products have been used for centuries, developed from ancient remedies that have been known for their incredible benefits for the skin. There is no better test than the test of time, and these ingredients have proven their worth and shown not to have any adverse side effects, guaranteeing healthy and beautiful looking skin.

Parabens are used in conventionally produced health and beauty products as a preservative to extend the shelf life of products. Parabens, however, are synthetic and mimic your body’s natural hormones. Many people worry that this can alter the functions of your body’s endocrine system. Many natural products work better than their conventional counterparts because they don’t contain unnecessary fillers or irritants. And while some unnatural products may seem to work better with the first try, over the long-term, the harmful chemicals that made your skin feel cleaner or your hair feel smoother may actually cause damage.

Why use synthetic products?

Something that is synthetic or a chemical isn't necessarily bad for you or your skin. However, some ingredients, whether synthetic or natural are best avoided or used in minimal quantities. Synthetic skincare means products incorporate laboratory and scientifically derived ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid. The formulas are made using chemical copies of natural ingredients. There are so many skincare products on the market and so many claims being made that it can be quite difficult for the consumer to make sense of it all.

Historically, natural alternatives have struggled to keep up with lab-grown chemicals in terms of performance and efficacy, but that's now changed.

Truth be told, many big brands are now going clean. Many company's although haven't 100% moved away but are implementing more cleaner ingredients to their products. So what does that tell you. The benefit of having something synthetically produced is that it may target the issue quickly, but as we are organic ourselves, the benefits may stop if the use if the product is stopped. It can also over time slowly change our skin structure to what we can tolerate due to over exposure. Synthetic doesn't mean bad, but many professional opinion say that its better to help something faster like uncontrollable breakouts and other serious skin conditions. However not for a long time. Just like antibiotics used for medical purposes. (having said that there are also medical alternatives, but that requires another blog post)
